These easy ahi tuna poke appetizers are representative of everything I love about New Year’s Eve parties – or any other cocktail party. Plates, platter and bowls of bits and bites, each offering a different flavor profile so you feel as though you’ve traveled the world by the time you make your way around the table. All done with a kamikaze cocktail in hand, of course.

How easy are these ahi appetizers? Chop the fish, mix with the marinade, green onions and sesame seeds, then divide the poke into appetizer spoons (Asian soup spoons that you would use to sip on pho broth or an udon noodle soup broth. Guests can pick up a spoon and slurp the poke straight into their mouths.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THESE TUNA POKE APPETIZERS:

These are the main components need for this recipe (affiliate links included)…

  • Tuna: Look for sushi grade tuna at your local fish store or Asian market. It should be a pink or rich red color and it should have a fresh sea smell, not an overly fishy odor.
  • Soy sauce: I use regular soy sauce, but feel free to use one of the reduced sodium versions. If following a gluten free diet, substitute tamari for the soy sauce.
  • Sesame oil: Just a dab will do you! Sesame oil can be found in most grocery stores in the international aisle. If you have an Asian market near you, you can likely find it for a much cheaper price there.
  • Agave nectar: While not all of poke sauces call for agave nectar or honey, I enjoy the slight sweetness it offers.
  • Green onion: Thinly slice the green onions, using both the green and white sections.
  • Toasted sesame seeds: I buy containers of toasted sesame seeds at the Asian market or the grocery store. Alternatively, toast raw sesame seeds in a dry skillet set over medium heat. Watch them carefully because they can burn quickly!

Can these appetizers be made ahead of time?

Preferably, you should serve the poke the same day so that the fish is a fresh as possible. Ideally, make it 2 to 3 hours ahead of time to allow the flavors to meld, then scoop the poke into the appetizer spoons before serving.

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces ahi tuna cut into 1/4-inch pieces
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (or tamari for gluten free)
  • 3/4 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 3/4 teaspoon agave nectar
  • 1 green onion thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, stir together the diced tuna, soy sauce, sesame oil, agave nectar and green onion.

  • Divide the tuna mixture between 12 Asian soup spoons (appetizer spoons).

  • Sprinkle the sesame seeds over the poke. Serve.
